Joshua Tree National Park

The Mojave desert holds some pretty good hiking attractions itself, Joshua Tree National Park having drawn my attention. For nearly a week I holed up in Yucca Valley, hiking out along the desert trails and climbing mountains such as Eureka Peak.

The flat desert plains of the Park, seen from Ryan Mountain summit. Lots of Joshua Trees and scrub cover the desert floot.

A Joshua Tree. A variant of yucca, these trees have a weird spongy bark which apparently helps them resist desert fires. One is featured on U2's eponymous album.

The valleys on the south edge of the park, around Eureka Peak. The range of mountains in the far distance includes San Jacinto.
