The Godfather

This is a fast-food Italian place, but also has a sit-down area. I've been here a couple of times, and am definitely a fan of their tiramisu and espresso. The cheese steak isn't too bad either, and they do a mean pizza.

To find it: go west on Route 10 from River Road (East Hanover), passing Pathmarket on your right. Just after the crossroads by Burger King, there's a road leading to a plaza. Godfather is about halfway along this plaza.

Pane Vino

This is a more up-market Italian place, serving some really nice pizza and pasta as well as more exotic Italian dishes like osso buco and bistecca all'Arrabiata. The decor is quite bright and cheery, and the waitresses are chatty and helpful. Prices are a fair hike above The Godfather, but you do generally get your money's worth. The desserts are a bit variable, but I've yet to have a main course which was anything less than good. The alcohol available includes 18-year old Macallan single malt, which was superb. Even a "taste" is close to a double UK measure.

To find it, go east on Route 10 from River Road. It's the next eatery past Wendy's with a distinctive 2-colour neon sign.

Macaroni Grill

A large Italian restaurant, the distinctive feature of this establishment is the waiting staff who break into spontaneous song, and even serenade you at the table. Somewhat unnerving at first, but you get used to it. The tables also have a paper cover and crayons so that you can doodle away during your meal. The foccacia and olive oil supplied is really good, much recommended. Food covers a reasonable range and is quite good. Prices are a bit less than Pane Vino, but my experience is that groups have to wait considerably longer at the Macaroni Grill.

To find it: go west on Route 10 from River Road, past Pathmarket. After you pass Taco Bell, turn right at the next lights and go to the plaza. The Macaroni Grill is next to Chili's, close to the road. Parking is usually pretty hard, so you may have to walk a bit. Good exercise anyway...

The Olive Garden

Quite similar to the Macaroni Grill in some respects, the feature of the Olive Garden which stands out is its massive portions. If you have a starter, coupled with the rather good bread, you will be very hard pressed to finish the main course. But the food is pretty good; prices are OK. It's quite a nice environment too. Worth a look, especially if you're hungry.

To find it: follow Route 10 eastwards until the roundabout where it intersects Eisenhower Parkway. Turn left (north) onto the Parkway, then take the next left into the plaza. The Olive Garden is right on the corner.

Taco Bell

A fast-food Mexican chain, you may remember Taco Bell from the ads featuring the chihuahua. "Yo quiero Taco Bell!" etc. It at least gives the impression of being healthier than Burger King, Wendy's etc. The service is pretty quick, and this place has a drive-thru for late opening. The food is generally edible, though far from gourmet. NB: the "Mountain Dew" they serve is laced with caffeine, so don't have a 32oz beaker of it if you're planning to sleep that night.

To find it: go west on Route 10 from River Road, past Pathmarket. You will see the Taco Bell sign on the right before the next set of traffic lights.

Ixtapa

This was my introduction to American cuisine when I arrived in the country. (Thanks, Diane!) And it was a very enjoyable introduction. There's a wide range of quite exotic Mexican cuisine, a bevy of spices and flavours, and tables out on the street so that in the hot summer afternoons or warm evenings you can immerse yourself in the bustle of Morristown while feasting on a fine meal.

They do a really good selection of margheritas, and though significantly more expensive than Chili's it's a finer and more authentic Mexican experience. Well worth a visit.

To find it: go to Morristown green and head east on the road towards Madison. It's a few tens of yards along the road on the right hand side.

Molly Malone's

This is a generic "Irish" bar / restaurant, but to be honest I wasn't too impressed. There's a good range of real draft beer, and the Guinness is apparently OK, but the food was nothing special and it was a bit dark and smokey. You'd probably be better off at Bogey's. Then again, I've only tried it once so they might have had an off-day.

To find it: go west on Route 10 from Ridgedale Avenue. It's on the right as you come into Whippany, just before Whippany Diner.

Begim Palace

This Indian restaurant does an excellent lunchtime buffet that is heartily recommended. For a shade under $8.00 you can keep coming back to the buffet table until sated. The decor is nice and the staff attentive. The food itself is pretty good, with a reasonable range of not-too-hot food. Spicy chutneys provide fodder for the more robust palate. Two platefuls will keep you satisfied for a while, and there's a good range of vegetarian dishes. You'll find it hard to beat for up to double the price they charge. For any Indian food lover, definitely worthwhile.

To find it: go east on Route 124 from the centre of Madison. About half a mile down on the left is a large shopping plaza. The Begim Palace is on the east side of the square.
